Heyoka Leather was created back in 2008 with Leslie Crow and her two best friends, cousins Rachel Avraham and Angela Bruyere. Specializing in custom leather goods ( ranging from classic line handbags to fine jewelry ), the three pride themselves in being an old fashioned family business handcrafting treasured heirlooms for the modern era.
In continuing our two part interview series, We recently had the opportunity to find out all the loves and influences of Leslie Crow :
LC : I draw my inspiration from the natural beauty that surrounds me. Whether I am on the farm in rural Texas, in the middle of the Arizona desert, or basking in the misty ocean views and wooded hills of Topanga Canyon, California the scenery and landscape greatly influences my art and creative process at the time. The more isolated and farther away from city noises and distractions I find myself, the more art I tend to create. The ritual of living in harmony with the seasons and powers of nature is so important. The chores and simple pleasures of country living remind me everyday to be grateful and humble and to walk the earth with respect for all living things.
I cant imagine what I would do if I couldn’t make art. I am always creating everyday whether its handcrafting custom leather goods for Heyoka Leather, silver-smithing, beadworking, painting, drawing, writing poetry or making clothes. Its rare to find me without at least two or three different projects going on at once.
Music is another huge influence in my creative process. Nothing beats listening to a great playlist or sitting around with friends playing guitar while I am creating art. A great artist once told me "art tears us apart and music puts us back together again" I truly believe it to be one of the most ancient symbiotic relationships known to man and my life as an artist wouldn’t be complete without all my great musician friends and their good vibes.
MR : Aside from making rad art, what else do you fancy?
LC : Riding horses, motorcycles, leather, turquoise, indian blankets, guns, knives, taxidermy, hand-rolled cigarettes, bluegrass music, bonfires, sleeping under the stars, hiking, dancing, going on roadtrips, telling jokes and watching the sky.
